Candida Overgrowth

Every human body contains candida. When a candida (yeast or fungal) overgrowth occurs (mostly due to antibiotics, steroids and the contraceptive Pill, which one should bear in mind when prescribing this to teenagers) the effects can be debilitating and the symptoms extremely difficult to get rid of. Many adults live with this condition but do not contribute it to their various symptoms. However, there are signs to look for. The symptoms are very wide-ranging but when a handful of these is present it strongly suggests candida overgrowth.

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Acid reflux
  • Mouth and tongue blisters
  • Sore throats
  • White-coated tongue
  • Dark under-eye circles
  • Chronic sinus problems
  • Night sweats
  • Dizziness/balance problems
  • Gluten intolerance
  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Stomach bloating
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • High temperature
  • Menstrual problems in teens/adults
  • Recurrent yeast infections
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Rashes/eczema
  • Stubborn acne
  • Dandruff
  • Toe nail fungus
  • Allergies
  • Light-headedness
  • Anxiety/depression
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings

The list goes on. These ailments can continue for tens of years if not treated, which has actually been my personal experience – and let me tell you, these little candida ‘monsters’ are exceptionally hard to get rid of after living in my body for so long.

Naturopaths can perform a quick skin prick blood test (called Candia5) to test for candida overgrowth. If results are positive, a restrictive anti-candida diet is generally put in place for several months or longer, however it is important to note that this alone will not get candida under control. The purpose of the diet is to weaken the candida by depriving it of the sugar and yeast that feed it.

To treat candida effectively, it is crucial to:

  1. Follow specific dietary guidelines (cutting out yeast, sugars and dairy. A naturopath can set up a dietary plan and monitor this).
  2. Take herbs and nutrients which help to kill off candida (garlic, olive leaf extract, coconut oil)
  3. Supplement with a powerful probiotic (many of these are suitable for young children)
